Help! The snails are eating my lettuces. I keep an organic garden
and I'd rather not use chemical pesticides to get rid of them -- what can
I do?

I've had good luck with the bowl-of-beer routine -- dig a hole in
the ground by your lettuces and stick a bowl in it so that the edges of
the bowl are flush with the ground. Then fill the bowl about halfway
with beer. The snails like the beer better than the lettuce, and they
fall in and drown!

The bowl works OK, but you have to fish mushy dead snails out of old
beer every day. I like the copper strip method -- tack copper strips to a
board and put it all the way around your bed. (the one in the garden).
The snails won't cross it.

Any hardware store should have them.

The Books That
Work Garden Encyclopedia, available on the Web, has lots of good
information about pest control in Chapter 4.
Check it out!
